Located north of the more populated resorts of Lewes and Rehoboth Beach, and part of Milton, Delaware’s municipality, Broadkill Beach is a tranquil segment of the Delaware Bay Shoreline that shouldn’t be missed.   What makes Broadkill Beach unique is its valued marine “native”, the horseshoe crab.   Situated amid the gorgeous Prime Hook National Wildlife Refuge, Broadkill Beach is an official sanctuary for horseshoe crabs, the state marine animal of Delaware and a "signature species" of the Delaware Estuary. Visitors are welcome to watch as these harmless animals fill the beach while spawning in May and June.

The survival of the world’s four remaining horse crab species will depend upon the preservation of its spawning habitat.  The “Horseshow Crab Sanctuary Program” was launched in 1999 and was designed to encourage coastal communities, like Broadkill Beach, to declare their shared habitat a horseshoe crab conservation sanctuary.  To date, over 12 miles of spawning habitat has been protected through this program.
