Situated at the head of the Broadkill River, Milton was first settled in 1672 and was known by various names until 1807, when it was named for the English poet, John Milton. Milton's history as a shipbuilding town remains very important to the town and it's residents. The homes built by sea captains more than a century ago have been lovingly restored and are some of the finest examples of Victorian and Colonial architecture in Delaware. Milton boasts 198 structures on the Federal Register and the quaint history of the town is preserved in the Lydia B. Cannon Museum, the Governor James Carey Home, the Chestnut Street Cemetary, and the Governor David Hazzard Mansion.
Currently, Milton serves local residents and summer tourists in the Milton, Broadkill Beach and Primehook Beach areas with family operated businesses and new office and shopping complexes. In Milton, community organizations abound, as well as a civic center, a memorial park, a volunteer fire department, a public library, a grogeous, restored playhouse and many new restaurants and shops.
Outdoor recreational opportunities are many in and around Milton, with the Broadkill River, Wagamon's Pond, Diamond Pond and Lavinia Pond all within minutes of any point in Milton. Public boat docks, fishing piers and community parks are also located within the town of Milton. If you're interested in hitting the resort beaches, a short 15 minute drive to Lewes or 25 minute drive to Rehoboth Beach is in order.
