Milton is located just a few miles from the Delaware Bay and the Atlantic Ocean and was ideal for shipbuilding in the olden days. Milton, Delaware was originally settled in 1672 by English Colonists and was once known as "Head of the Broadkill" due to its vicinity at the head of the Broadkill River. Milton was known by many names until 1807, when it was renamed in honor of the English poet John Milton.
Milton's shipbuilding past and history remain of high importance to the residents of Milton. They are proud of their heritage and pay homage to history through events and monuments. The proud residents of Milton, Delaware keep their proud history documented through protected artifacts and architecture.
Today, Milton serves its local residents along with the tourists to Milton, Broadkill Beach and Primehook Beach in the summer season. There are many family owned and operated businesses in the Town of Milton. Recreational opportunities surround the town of Milton such as the activites of Broadkill River and the numerous local ponds. There are also public boat docks and fishing piers for all to enjoy.
